Wearing compression stockings can be challenging, especially if you’re not used to them. However, they are beneficial for vein health, improving circulation, and preventing swelling. Here are some tips to help make wearing compression stockings easier:

Choose the Right Size and Compression Level

  • Get Proper Measurements: Ensure you’re wearing the correct size by measuring your legs, usually at the ankle, calf, and sometimes the thigh, depending on the length of the stockings.
  • Compression Level: Make sure the compression level (measured in mmHg) matches what your doctor or healthcare provider recommended. Higher compression levels are harder to put on, but your doctor may suggest a specific level for your needs.

Use Rubber Gloves

  • Rubber Gloves: Wear rubber or latex gloves when putting on your stockings. This gives you a better grip on the fabric and makes it easier to smooth out wrinkles without damaging the stockings.

Apply Stockings in the Morning

  • Early Application: Put on your compression stockings first thing in the morning when your legs are less swollen. It’s easier to get them on before your legs start to swell from standing or sitting throughout the day.

Use a Stocking Donning Aid

  • Stocking Donner: There are special tools available, like a stocking donner, which help you slide the stockings onto your legs. This is especially useful for high-compression stockings or for people with limited mobility.
  • Silk Foot Slip: Some brands include or sell a slip or liner that you can put over your foot to help the stocking slide on more easily.

Prep Your Skin

  • Dry Your Skin: Make sure your skin is completely dry before putting on the stockings. If your legs are sweaty or damp, it will be harder to get the stockings on.
  • Moisturize at Night: If your skin is dry, moisturize your legs before bed, not right before putting on the stockings, as lotion can make it slippery and harder to wear them.

Turn the Stockings Inside Out

Reverse the Stocking: Turn the stocking inside out up to the heel, then insert your foot into the foot of the stocking. Once your toes and heel are in place, gradually roll the stocking up your leg.

Work in Sections

  • Roll and Pull: After getting the foot portion of the stocking on, work the fabric up your leg in small sections. Pull gently to avoid overstretching or tearing the fabric.
  • Avoid Wrinkles: Smooth out any wrinkles as you go to avoid discomfort or uneven pressure on your leg.

Elevate Your Legs Beforehand

  • Elevate for a Few Minutes: Lying down and elevating your legs for 5-10 minutes before putting on your stockings can help reduce swelling and make it easier to get them on.

Take Breaks

  • Go Slowly: If it’s difficult to get the stockings on in one go, take a short break and try again. Don’t rush or force them, as this can damage the stockings or hurt your legs.

Care for Your Stockings

  • Wash and Dry Properly: Follow the care instructions for your stockings to maintain their elasticity. Hand-washing in cold water and air drying helps them last longer.
  • Rotate Pairs: If possible, have at least two pairs of stockings and rotate between them to prevent overstretching and wear.

By following these tips, you’ll find it easier to wear compression stockings and ensure you get the maximum benefit for your leg and vein health.
